Notes

The official body, established in 1483, is responsible for granting new coats of arms and regulating their use in England and Wales. The library holds the lists of these grants and many registered pedigrees which were used to support the granting of a new coat of arms or for proving a hereditary right to bear arms.

The original Heraldic Visitation records covering 1530 to 1688 are housed at the College of Arms together with funeral certificates and other manuscript collections of genealogical interest. Research can only be carried out by the Heralds who are officers of the College. For more information about the work and collections of the College see 'The Records and Collections of the College of Arms' by A.R. Wagner.
