Notes

The National Records of Scotland was created on 1 April 2011 by the amalgamation of the National Archives of Scotland (NAS) and General Register Office for Scotland (GROS). National Records of Scotland (NRS) combines the work of the two bodies, including the ScotlandsPeople family history website and centre.

The office has been responsible for the registration of civil births, marriages and deaths in Scotland since 1 January 1855, including marine and overseas deaths and consular returns of births, deaths and marriages from 1914. The office also holds the register of neglected entries (1801 to 1854), the census returns, divorce registers from 1984, the Old Parish Registers, army returns of births, deaths and marriages (1881 to 1959), war registers from 1899 and the adopted children register from 1930. All family research takes place at the Scotlands People Centre which provides access to GROS digitised material along with records from the National Archives of Scotland and the Court of the Lord Lyon.

The web site has a downloadable List of Parishes and Registration Districts and other useful information.

The index with images and full record can be searched at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.
