Notes

The National Register of Archives for Scotland, established in 1945, forms a part of the National Archives of Scotland. It compiles a record of collections of private papers in Scotland, to encourage their care, and to make information about them available to researchers and others. The Register has over 4,200 lists or 'surveys' describing papers held by private individuals and families, landed estates, clubs and societies, businesses and law firms. Paper copies of the Register are available for consultation at the National Archives of Scotland, National Library of Scotland and The National Archives in Kew. The index to the surveys is available at many local and university libraries.

An online version of the register is available at www.nas.gov.uk/onlineRegister. The online catalogue of the National Register of Archives for Scotland provides access to the whereabouts of private material (not printed material) in Scottish locations, although not all material is available through the online catalogue. The material consists of papers relating to people, families, landed estates, clubs and societies, businesses and other organisations.
The ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh provides access to the National Archives of Scotland digitised material along with records from and the General Register Office for Scotland and the Court of the Lord Lyon.
