Reproductive Loan Fund (Ireland)

Nature of Source

Records from the Irish Reproductive Loan Fund which was set up in 1824 to provide small loans to those most affected by the effects of widespread poverty and famine in Ireland. The records provide useful genealogical information on a group of people who might not appear in other records. Local associations and committees administered the scheme.

In the area of finance the records of the Irish tontines house at The National Archives in Kew could be used for tracing Irish ancestry. A tontine is a form of annuity organised by the state. The investors shared the annuity each year until each investor died leaving a sole subscriber. The records are usually associated with the wealthy who subscribed on behalf of a relative, known as the nominee. Significantly, the records provide the all-important address of the subscriber. In addition the names of the subscriber and nominee are given and sometimes the age and date of death of the nominee.
