Tithe Applotment Books (Ireland)

Nature of Source

Records from parish-by-parish listings of land occupying heads of household. The valuations were carried out as part of a reform of the tithe payments which were made payable to the established Protestant Church of Ireland. The process resulted in a complete valuation of tithable land in Ireland. The valuation was organised by parish and then township. Some parishes were amalgamated for the initial survey.

The books provide a snapshot land holdings and occupation before the mass emigration following the Great Famine. However, the valuation did not cover cities and towns or rural dwellers such as landless labourers and weavers. The original tithe system was payable to the established (Protestant) church and was thus very unpopular with Roman Catholics and dissenters. Some land and property was exempt such as Church of Ireland holdings and former monastic land. Those that refused to pay started the Tithe War 1831-1838 and generated the records of the Tithe Defaulters.
