The library founded in 1610 is the main repository for the archives of the Archbishops of Canterbury and for the history of the Church of England.
The holdings include published copies of Church of England parish registers for the City of London, Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex; bishops transcripts for the London area; a few registers and transcripts for churches outside the British Isles; marriage licences granted by the Vicar General and Faculty Office which are available online at www.findmypast.co.uk; church court records including the Court of Arches and divorce records; medical licences issued by the Archbishop of Canterbury between 1535-1775.
The library is a major participant the Church Plans Online web site.
The printed books catalogue of Lambeth Palace Library is available online which includes over 130,000 items held by the Library including the entire collections of printed books, prints and periodicals. The catalogue of archives and manuscripts includes descriptions of original records held at the Library including those formerly held at the Church of England Record Centre. A number of Research Guides are available at the web site including a guide to Family History and Genealogy.
