The Society offers research material, guidance and support for those interested in genealogy and family history. The Library covers all aspects of genealogical research, offering access to over 25,500 items on open shelves and extensive collections for family and local history.
Resources include quick-reference books, guides, family/local history works, directories, military, monumental inscription transcripts, parish registers and specialist guides for researching Jewish, Huguenot, Catholic ancestors and British India, among others.
The on-line library catalogue is called SoGCAT which lists the holdings on the premises in London. To find out what is held for a particular place (parish registers, monumental inscriptions etc.), type the name of the parish/town into the box to the left of ‘search’ and clickon ‘search’. From the list of results that appears, click on your parish to see what is held for that place. You can do the same for overseas places. The catalogue contains details of everything in the library except the Document Collections. for the Society’s search and copy service.
The Society journal The Genealogists Magazine is published in March, June, September and December with indexes and electronic versions available in the library.
The online Collections Guides covers a variety of subjects including Online Resources, Library Resources, Archive Resources, Jewish Genealogy Resources, Huguenot Genealogy Resources, Catholic Genealogy Resources and British India Genealogy Resources.
The Learning Hub section offers access to in-depth guides and quick tips on various family history sources, records and research techniques.
SoG Explore provides powerful search capabilities to help you find your ancestors in SoG’s extensive record collections. The online resource includes over 1 million images and 17 million names. Non-members can carry out free surname searches but will need to join the society to view the full record details.
The SoG partnership with Findmypast provides users with unique record sets including Civil Service Evidence of Age 1752-1948 and the Great Western Railway Shareholders Index 1835-1932.
Amongst the Special Collections held in the library can be found The Great Card Index. The index contains over a million slips of paper containing various items of genealogical information extracted from sources such as parish registers, marriage licences, will indexes, monumental inscriptions and references to Chancery Proceedings. The index was compiled by Society members including Leoline Griffiths, Mr Fothergill and Rev. T.C. Dale between 1911 and 1939 covering the period from the late 11th century to the late 19th century.
