Introduction
Newspapers are printed (now often digital) publications issued daily or weekly, recording events and notices as well as commentary on local, national and international affairs. For family history research, they are a valuable and often essential source. They can provide rich details about individuals, families, events and places, often adding information that cannot be found in official records such as civil registration, census returns and parish registers. Many historic newspapers have been microfilmed or digitised and are now available online, making them easier to access than ever before.
Historical Development
The earliest surviving English language newspapers appeared in the early 17th century. The first regular English newspaper is generally considered to be Corante (1621), followed by titles such as Weekly News (1622).
Key developments include:
- The Weekly Newes was published in London in 1622 and is often regarded as the first British newspaper.
- The Times was first published in 1785 as the Daily Universal Register and renamed The Times in 1788.
- The Observer was established in 1791 and is the oldest national Sunday newspaper in Britain still in publication.
- The London Gazette is Britain’s oldest continuously published official newspaper and is issued each working day by TSO (The Stationery Office) on behalf of HMSO. It was founded in 1665 as the Oxford Gazette and renamed the London Gazette in 1666. The Gazette initially carried reports on foreign events but later emerged as a means of communicating official government notices. Although not daily news publication in the traditional sense, it remains the official public record of important statutory and non-statutory notices.
From the 1830s, the regional press expanded rapidly from just a few titles, to newspapers covering most towns and cities by the mid-19th century.
Advances in printing technology, paper production and rising literacy rates in the 18th and 19th centuries transformed newspapers into a into a mass production industry. When searching for local newspapers remember titles often changed names or merged over the years possibly due to a takeover by another newspaper group.
Press and Newspaper Taxes
Before 1855, newspapers in Britain were subject to a series of taxes often referred to as the “taxes on knowledge.” Understanding these taxes may help explain gaps in coverage and regional variation.
- Stamp Duty (1712-1855)
This was a tax on newspapers and pamphlets, indicated by a printed revenue stamp on each copy. It increased the price of newspapers, limiting readership largely to the middle and upper classes and reducing coverage of ordinary people and local events.
- Advertisement Duty (1712-1853)
The Duty was technically a part of the same legislation as the Stamp Act 1712, but functioned as a separate charge within that act. The Act levied a flat fee on advertisements printed in newspapers. The additional costs increased the cost of placing notices such as births, marriages and deaths, property sales and business adverts. As a result, fewer personal and family notices were published in earlier newspapers especially from working-class families.
- Paper Duty (1712-1861)
This was an excise tax on the weight of raw paper which effectively taxed the paper itself. The impact raised production costs and limited the size and number of pages.
Following the repeal of newspaper taxes in the mid-19th century, newspapers became cheaper and more widely available. This led to rapid growth in local and regional newspapers.
What You Can Find in Historic Newspapers
Local newspapers are particularly rich in content. Look for:
- Birth, marriage and death announcements
- Engagements, anniversaries and other family notices
- Obituaries and funeral reports, often highly detailed
- Coroners’ inquests, which may name relatives and witnesses
- Court and criminal proceedings
- Bankruptcy and insolvency notices
- Property sales and auctions
- Military reports and casualty lists
- Accidents and local incidents
- School, church and community events
- Advertisements for tradesmen, businesses and services
- Passenger lists and emigration notices, for some periods
Periodicals and Specialist Indexes
These indexes complement newspapers and are invaluable for locating specialist articles, transcriptions and local studies not available elsewhere.
PERSI (Periodical Source Index)
PERSI is the largest index of specialist genealogical and local history publications and journals featuring over 2.5 million entries. The index covers English language publications since c1800 onwards and is indexed by named individuals, families, places and subjects. The index is compiled by the Allen County Public Library (USA) and full articles can be ordered from the supplier listed or directly from Allen County Public Library.
GPAI (Genealogical Periodical Annual Index)
The index, published by Heritage Books, is a primarily a published reference series used to locate articles published in English language periodicals. The reference work is available at selected public libraries. Use WorldCat to find the nearest physical library that holds the GPAI. Some volumes are available online via the HathiTrust Digital Library but only with limited search facilities.

Where Found
British Library
The news collection is a unique and extensive archive of newspapers, magazines, trade journals and periodicals, which has been acquired by legal deposit, purchase and donation. The collection covers international, national, local and special interest publications dating from the 17th century to today. Historic collections include The Burney Collection of Early English Newspapers and the Thomason Tracts collection of news-books and pamphlets from the period of the English Civil War.
The Newsroom reading room at St Pancras (London) provides access to the British Library’s major collections of British and overseas newspapers newspaper on microfilm, as digital archives and hard-copy newspapers. The Boston Spa (Yorkshire) site houses the main stored print collection which can be requested in the reading room.
The main online catalogue allows users to search for specific titles or browse the collection using the Advanced Search by selecting “Newspapers” as the material type.
National Library of Scotland
The Library holds extensive collections of regional, local and national Scottish newspapers from the 18th to 20th centuries.
Belfast Central Library
Newspaper Library. The library holds the largest collection of local newspapers in Northern Ireland ranging in date from the 18th century to the present day. The collection includes almost complete runs of the Belfast newspaper titles, most notably the Belfast Newsletter from 1759, as well as a large range of provincial newspaper titles from every county in Northern Ireland and some from the Republic of Ireland.
The National Library of Wales
The Library houses the world’s largest collections of Welsh newspapers featuring extensive local and regional titles from across Wales. Hard copies and microfilm reels are available in the reading rooms for papers printed after the Copyright Act of 1911. The Library hosts Welsh Newspapers Online, a free searchable digital archive.
National Library of Ireland
The Library is Ireland’s legal deposit library collecting all national and regional newspapers published in the Republic, plus selected Northern Irish and international titles. Much is preserved on microfilm, with digitised access via onsite subscriptions to the Irish Newspaper Archive.
County Record Offices
Local archives hold collection of regional and local weekly newspapers, largely available on microfilm, covering from the early 18th century to the present day. Many have newspaper cuttings files often categorised by surname, biography, or subject.

National UK
British Newspaper Archive
An online archive providing access to over 90 million fully searchable pages from the British Library’s newspaper collections, covering more than 2,000 newspaper titles from across the UK and Ireland. It is free to search, but full access usually requires a subscription. The archive can also be used free of charge in the British Library’s Reading Rooms at St Pancras and Boston Spa and at many libraries, archives and local and family history centres. The project was developed in partnership with the British Library and Findmypast/DC Thomson.
British Newspapers Part I: 1800-1900
Ranging from early tabloids like the Illustrated Police News to radical papers like the Chartist Northern Star, this collection comprises British newspapers that span a vast range of national, regional and local interests from 1800 to 1900. Access is available in the British Library Reading Room and at participating institutions. The content can be searched for free with limited context at Connected Histories along with a number of other databases.
17th and 18th Century Burney Newspapers Collection
This collection contains newspapers, newsbooks, pamphlets, proclamations, and broadsides from the 17th and 18th centuries, drawn from the Reverend Charles Burney’s collection at the British Library. It is one of the largest collections of early English news media and includes material from the UK and Ireland. The collection is searchable through Gale Primary Sources and at participating institutions.
Findmypast
The British Newspapers collection (1700s onwards) includes over 100 million searchable pages from more than 2,700 regional, national, and specialist titles across England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and former British territories including Canada, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Barbados and Jamaica. In addition, over 2 million newspaper pages are available to search and view for free from roughly 1700 to the early 20th century.

Cambrian Index Online
The database contains hundreds of thousands of entries from newspapers relating to people and events occurring in an area roughly represented by the former county of West Glamorgan, mainly covering the period 1804 to 1881. Birth, marriage, and death entries are indexed comprehensively up to 1914, with some later entries from the 1920s to 1930.
Nineteenth-Century Serials Edition

The archive is a free legacy collection of digitised historical newspapers scanned by Google. It contains thousands of newspaper titles with millions of individual issues and pages, drawn from various countries including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and others. Coverage spans from the early 1700s up to around 2008-2009. Users can browse by title or use basic search. Clicking a title takes you to its list of available issues where you can view scanned page images.
NewspaperArchive
The archive of digitised newspapers covers from the 17th century to the 21st with titles from the UK, Ireland, the United States and many other countries. It is particularly strong for small‑town and local newspapers.
ITN Video Archive
The archive is a unique and remarkable repository of British cultural history, featuring iconic news footage from ITN’s first broadcasts in 1955 to the present day. With more than a million video clips available, the archive covers a wide range of genres, including UK and international news, sport, entertainment, war, disasters, politics, the environment, and royals.
British Pathé
The news video archive spans the years from 1896-1978 and includes footage from around the globe of major events, famous faces, fashion trends, travel, science, and culture. The entire archive of 85,000 films is available to view for free on the British Pathé website while licences can be acquired for other uses.

Hertfordshire Names Online
Newspapers & Magazines, 1758-2026. The site provides online access to the Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies indexes including newspaper and magazine indexes from 1758. Searching the indexes is free but a charge is made for copies of a document. Titles include: Herts Advertiser; Hertfordshire Mercury; Herts and Essex Observer.

Somerset & Dorset Notes and Queries, 1890-1980. A valuable resource of genealogical information, you can find articles on local history, folklore and literature as well as valuable information like family trees, parish register extracts and copies of documents in private hands.

Sussex, Eastbourne Gazette Newspaper Notices, 1858-1931. The index includes names found within the newspaper pages related to birth, marriage and death notices.
Cumbria FHS
The site provides transcribed extracts from five 19th-century Cumbrian newspapers, including Carlisle Journal, Carlisle Patriot, Westmorland Gazette, Penrith Herald and Cumberland Pacquet. It includes many births, marriages, deaths, court cases and general news items.
Herefordshire History
Herefordshire Newspapers. Scanned images of local newspapers including the Hereford Times, Ledbury Reporter and Ross Gazette and covering the years 1914-1919.
West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser
Transcriptions of the West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser, 1836-1887. Expect to find births, marriages, and deaths as well as court reports and coroner’s inquests.
Georgian Newspaper Project
This database contains brief summaries of articles, advertisements and notices in the Bath Chronicle newspaper, for selected years between 1770 and 1800.
Manx National Heritage

Irish Family History Centre
The site offers individual digitised issues of The Penny Illustrated Paper and Illustrated Times to view online. The journal was a popular 19th-century British illustrated weekly, first published in 1861 with extensive Irish coverage.
Old Mersey Times
This is a volunteer run site that transcribes articles and notices from old Merseyside newspapers, mainly focusing on Liverpool and Wirral locals, from the 18th to early 20th centuries. Topics include births, marriages and deaths, crimes, murders, bigamy, divorce and deaths and inquests.

From Weaver to Web
Online Visual Archive of Calderdale. World War One Newspapers. Access digitised the pages of the Halifax Weekly Courier from the beginning of 1914 to the end of 1918, searchable by date or keyword.

Representative Church Body Library
The Church of Ireland Gazette, 1856-2010. Digitized and fully searchable online editions covering the all-island newspaper the Church of Ireland Gazette in print since 1856. The content offers coverage of clergy appointments, parish news and wider Protestant and Irish affairs across the 19th and 20th centuries.
Irish Genealogical Research Society
Smythe-Wood newspapers database. This collection of biographical notices was taken from Irish newspapers compiled by Alastair Smythe-Wood (1914-1997). Although the range of newspapers covers all of Ireland, the data tends to represent mainly the nine northern counties which form the province of Ulster.
