Free UK Genealogy

Nature of Source

Free UK Genealogy provides free, online access to family history records. We work with a team of dedicated volunteers to create high-quality transcriptions of public records from governmental sources, parish churches, and other trusted institutions.

The organisation supports three volunteer led projects transcribing family history records:

FreeBMD. The site was founded in 1998 and is a database of the General Register Office (GRO) birth, marriage and death indexes from 1837 for England and Wales.

FreeREG. The site provides free online access to transcriptions of birth, marriage and burial records from Church of England and non-conformist registers covering England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

FreeCEN. The site provides free online access to transcriptions of 19th Century census returns. Volunteers have been working since 1999 concentrating on the censuses from 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1891.

Free UK Genealogy relies on the support of volunteers to help with the transcribing of records, managing the organisation and projects and supporting the infrastructure, so we welcome anyone that would like to give their time to help us.

GenGuide is completely non-profit and I enjoy looking out for new resources and keeping the site up to date. I do this for nothing because family history research is all about helping each other. However the cost of maintaining GenGuide means I need your help as well, especially with the site hosting costs.

Obviously not everyone can or will donate but your donation will help keep GenGuide running for yourself and others.
