Notes
The General Register Office is part of Her Majesty’s Passport Office and has been responsible for the civil registration of births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales since 1 July 1837.. The index can be searched in person at various locations in England and Wales and at various online sites (See the guide Research your family history using the General Register Office for full details.) Once the index entry has been identified, the certificate can be ordered online at the GRO website. The office also indexes of still-births, adoptions, births and deaths at sea, overseas forces BMDs including WWI and WWII deaths and BMDs registered in foreign consuls. A separate section Births, deaths, marriages and care explains the registration process and certificate ordering in detail together with Frequently Asked Questions giving information found on certificates.
