The Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain (JGSGB), formed in 1992, promotes and encourages the study of Jewish genealogy. The society assists all those tracing the family history of their Jewish ancestors. The society encourages Jewish genealogical education and research and promote the indexing, transcription and preservation of old records.
The extensive library is located in the premises of the Society of Genealogists. The library is a separate entity and has its own space in the building. The library is staffed by volunteers from the JGSGB and is open to JGSGB members and visitors.
Members benefit from regular workshops and meetings on a wide variety of family history topics as well as Special Interest Group and regional meetings. The Library & Resource Centre, also open to non-members, houses more than 1,000 books and periodicals, computers, Data CDs with access to major genealogical online databases, family tree collections and a unique collection of Yizkor Books (community remembrance books). Members can participate in the online JCR-UK Discussion Group. Publications include SHEMOT, published 3/4 times per year and the JGSGB newsletter as well as a number of Jewish genealogy guides and books. The JGSGB maintains a Register of Professional Researchers and Translators who are members of the Society who can offer help with research. The list is available on request. A number of educational leaflets including French Jewish Genealogy, Jewish Newspapers of the UK and Kindertransport at the National Archives are available for members.
Databases from the Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain containing a variety of records are incorporated into the JewishGen & JGSGB United Kingdom Database. A few browsable lists remain on the JGSGB website.
