The National Archives of Ireland holds many of the records which are relevant to Irish genealogy and local history. However, almost all pre-1922 records were destroyed by the 1922 shelling of the Public Record Office located in the Four Courts building in Dublin, marking the beginning of the civil war. The National Archives of Ireland contains the surviving records previously held by the Public Record Office at the Four Courts, Dublin and by the State Paper Office in Dublin. A summary and samples of the material held at the National Archives is available on CD called Counties in Time, produced by the National Archives and Eneclann. The website has a separate section for genealogical research which has information on how to research you family history, sources of information that are available in the National Archives for family and local history research as well as a Research Guide for those beginning research into family history. Visiting members of the public can take advantage of the Genealogy Service which offers a free, short personal consultation service by professional genealogists.
