GenGuide is completely non-profit and I enjoy looking out for new resources and keeping the site up to date. I do this for nothing because family history research is all about helping each other. However the cost of maintaining GenGuide means I need your help as well, especially with the site hosting costs.
Obviously not everyone can or will donate but your donation will help keep GenGuide running for yourself and others.
Royal Navy - Half Pay Registers - Officers (Military)
Nature of Source
Records of officers paid a retainer whilst out of work. The payments acted as pension in later years for those who retired, as a formal pension scheme did not exist.
Other pension records can be found in ADM 18, ADM 11, ADM 22, ADM 104, PMG 15 and PMG 16. Full Pay Lists can be found in ADM 24 but do not survive before 1795. Bruno Pappalardo's Tracing Your Naval Ancestors published by the Public Record Office will provide detailed information on the many and various series of records held at The National Archives dealing with naval pension records.
Service records for all ranks who served after 1920 remain with the Ministry of Defence with each military service maintaining its own record office. The Veterans UK web site provides contact details of where to apply for service records for each of the services.
